Saco Heath, late summer update
From Harry Johnson on August 3:
Hey all. Stopped by the Heath to check on it today. Looks like it was an interesting week. The far end of the parking lot, on the side closest to the road, had the remnants of what had been a very large car fire from the past few days. Huge bits of grille/bumper lay in twisted & melted heaps; thousands of tiny fragments of broken glass from one or more shattered windows; splats of aluminum that had melted & resolidified; charred earth. The works. I moved the big stuff off the lot into a pile by the brush, and tried to tidy up. But there's still -so- much broken glass there, I think it needs a much more thorough cleaning/covering/removal/whatever.
As for the trail itself, the words of the day are mud & bugs! But the boardwalk's holding up fairly well, just a few new breaks throughout. I spent a couple hours pulling more nails from the old usable planks & relaying them as corduroy on a couple of the boggy bits. Just drops in a bucket, but at least I managed to leave the place a touch better than I found it.
