Heath looking good
The following report was sent by trail steward Harold Johnson last month.
I had a chance today to check out the Heath. I walked out to the far side, to loop in the red-pine forest. Overall the trail looks pretty good. It was easy to follow, and not too icy. Nobody else was there today, but it's obviously gotten a lot of foot traffic since the last snowfall. It was actually quite a beautiful day to be out, upper 30s and no wind. The lack of leaves did bring the truck noise from Rt. 112 far into the preserve, unfortunately.
The boards of the trail are holding up, with no significant new breaks. Along the trail there's one new fallen tree, a small pitch pine on the Heath-proper just before the benches. It's currently supported by a couple young, spindly white birches. Its top 2-3 feet are looming above the trail. I suppose it's technically a safety hazard, though it doesn't look likely to do much harm even if it were to come down. I was able to locate trail-guide signposts #1, 2, 3, 6, and 7. Signposts #4 & 5 are missing, either stolen or blown over & buried by a recent storm.
There were very few signs of footprints going off-trail, which suggests that folks are generally staying where they should be. And there was very little litter (with the exception of one CSI-worthy biological sample that I picked up with a twig and quickly threw into a bag).
Overall, a very nice hour spent in a wilderness I had all to myself.
