Saco Heath boardwalk repairs planned
The Nature Conservancy, which maintains the boardwalk on the Saco Heath, is preparing for repairs of the mile-long path which has degraded significantly in recent years.
The organization is planning to hire a trail crew leader who will supervise the rebuilding of the boardwalk. The work will be done with volunteers, as well as a six-person crew from the Student Conservation Association which will spend 20 days working at the preserve this summer, according to Nancy Sferra of The Nature Conservancy.
That team will be followed by a four-person crew from the Leadership for Environmental Action for the Future which will spend four weeks working on the trail.
The first work party is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering for that or other work parties, please call Jon Bailey at the TNC Southern Maine office (251-2256)
Volunteers can expect to help with hauling gravel, building waterbars, leveling trails, carrying lumber, drilling holes, building boardwalk sections, trimming brush, and painting blazes.
Sferra said The Nature Conservancy is hoping to complete at least half of the trail reconstruction this summer.
