Ferry Landing Trail

Completed Fall, 2002

We started construction on this trail in the spring of 2001, although planning began much earlier with the donation of 8 acres of land by developer Diane Doyle. Diane was building the Ferry Landing project on Ferry Road and offered us the land in back of the subdivision.

In addition, Diane donated $25,000 toward the cost of materials to build the trail.

This project has been a collaborative effort that involved Diane's company Doyle Enterprises, the Saco Department of Public Works, which built the parking lot at the trailhead, The Saco Conservation Commission which donated funds for two benches, the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club which spent a Saturday spreading gravel on the trailbed and, of course, our wonderful volunteers.

The trail consists of a 2,300-foot loop which encircles a pair of massive tupelo trees. There are several hundred feet of boardwalk to carry hikers over wet portions of the land. The resting benches are stone and wood and the trailbed is gravel.

Our continuing plans for this trail include installing educational displays for the tupelo trees and hopefully someday connecting this to a larger network that includes the Ferry Beach Ecology School and Ferry Beach State Park.
