Located a few minutes from downtown Biddeford, Clifford Park contains far more trails than we could show on our map. A large map sign located beside the Pool Road parking lot shows the most significant trails and their color-coded trail markers. Although the park can be crossed in a straight line in a half mile, the large number of informal trails makes it easy to Òget turned aroundÓ. A compass is recommended for your first few visits.
Clifford Park was purchased, well below market value, for $1,500 in 1894 from the Clifford family who wished to help preserve its natural beauty for future generations of area residents. It was dedicated on the 4th of July in 1896. During that festive dedication ceremony, City Councilor Dr. Bassford noted during his remarks, "How many of our citizens are not aware how beautiful this spot is; they have never visited it and do not know of its charm and grandeur. More than100 years later, are we also too busy to enjoy its special beauty?" |
